In 2009, the art of Aubusson tapestry making was recognised by UNESCO on its List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This honour highlights the originality of highly meticulous expertise, passed down from generation to generation and in the process of transformation in the present day.
Alongside several additional initiatives including the Aubusson Tapestry Museum, the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie et de l’Art Tissé was created to keep this exceptional heritage alive.
Through both a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, visitors can discover the evolution of tapestry, from the legendary scenery and greenery of the 17th century to the most impressive contemporary creations. Each year, the Cité promotes the creation of contemporary tapestries, with a call for projects which attracts responses from an increasing number of acclaimed artists.
In 2015, the Cité will be housed in the former site of the Ecole Nationale d’Art Décoratif, which formerly played host to tapestry weaving students and more recently ran visual arts courses.
The original building has been modified according to an architectural agenda inspired by tapestry. Decorated with vertical lines made from multicoloured textile membrane and wooden slats, the façade makes reference to the loom and thread used for weaving.
The Nef des Tentures is the name of the completely convertible central exhibition area, which draws inspiration from theatre techniques to showcase tapestries in their original setting and context.
The Cité de la Tapisserie et de l’Art Tissé runs professional tapestry weaving courses and offers support to professionals for a variety of projects.
The resource centre holds tens of thousands of documents on the subject of tapestry, textiles and artistic creation.
